The beginning
Armadillo has been operating in the transportation market since 1991. The business started with the deliveries of oil equipment to remote areas of Western Siberia for Texas-based companies which operated in oil extraction and production. The unusual name of the company came from the US. A rodent, named armadillo, the symbol of the state of Texas, was successfully adapted in Russia to become the company name.
1991 – 2003: dynamic growth
The period of 1991 – 2003 saw fast business growth where Armadillo successfully launched and commercialized international and airfreight delivery services. This became possible due to partnerships with leading international and domestic airlines.
In 1999, Armadillo and a Swedish partner company set up Armadillo Business Parcel, a provider which successfully launched an express parcel and freight delivery service in Russia with unmatched delivery time guarantees. Even today the solution launched then remains an unmatched offer on Russia’s transportation logistics market. The newly-established company opened offices in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
In 2000, Armadillo Business Parcel opened branches in Nizhny Novgorod, Voronezh, Samara and Yaroslavl, these were followed by branches in Kazan, Rostov-on-Don and Krasnodar in 2001 as well as in Ekaterinburg in 2002.
2004: amalgamation with GeoPost as a building block for further success
On September 1, 2004, both Armadillo and Armadillo Business Parcel became affiliate companies of GeoPost which consolidates the express service subsidiaries of La Poste Group, and operate in the framework of GeoPost Yurtiçi Kargo joint venture.
2004 - 2010: continued success
Between 2004 and 2010 we continuously invested in infrastructure development by expanding our depot network, which today covers all Russia’s regions, from North West to the Russian Far East.
To make our services even more convenient and accessible to our customers, in 2005 – 2010 we opened eight City Depots in key industrial and business areas of Moscow, St. Petersburg,Togliatti and Lipetsk the total area of the City Depots being in excess of 3 thousand sq. m.
As of 2006 we offer DPD CLASSIC international service which represents a reliable and effective delivery solution covering 220 countries and territories worldwide.
In 2008 and 2010 we launched DPD 10:00 and DPD 13:00 services which represent ideal solutions for time-certain domestic parcel and freight delivery (by 10:00 and 13:00 of a specified day) with unmatched financial guarantees.
In 2009 we launched DPD AVIA EXPRESS, an optimal solution for the delivery of priority domestic parcels and freight to Russia’s major cities.
DPD in Russia today: strong brand, one team, no limits
As of 2007, we trade under the international DPD brand. DPD forms the international network and world brand of GeoPost Group which we are part of. As a leading international provider of parcel and express services with decades of experience in parcel shipping, DPD provides daily transport of 2 million parcels. In 800 depots across 40 DPD countries, over 24,000 employees are working to serve more than 300,000 customers.
